Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his designs for a lavish reception room double the dimensions of the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing to construct it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and recently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have imagined – independently wrecking large sections of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of multiple the richest Americans, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.

As confusing as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of hate who endorses specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Jesus that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans might have little sense about him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably not the account of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape covert authorities. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for other people, especially for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the opposite cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the attacker; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you ought to provide the person your additional clothing too.
The obvious and straightforward reality that Christ from scripture requests a form of radical love concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christian religion something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness requiring to be contained. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Highest Among Us
So I have been inspired to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has served as significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in numbers during minor elections.
