Space Traveler Shares Depression Following Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
